Giant ATX 27.5″ –  £345.00 – £395.00

Giant describes its ATX as having ‘classic hardtail ride quality’, but don’t be fooled — it’s a thoroughly modern mountain bike that rolls on contemporary 27.5in wheels. The frame is made from Giant’s proven lightweight ALUXX aluminium, designed specifically to make the most of both models’ Suntour XCT 100mm suspension fork. Two entry-level bikes are available: the ATX 27.5 2 comes fitted with Shimano Tourney gears and Tektro mechanical disc brakes; while the ATX 27.5 1 features upgraded Shimano derailleurs.

Talon 27.5 £475 – £1095

A step up in performance from the ATX range, the Talon is Giant’s mid-range hardtail, featuring another lightweight ALUXX aluminium frame. Designed to offer just a little bit more performance on the trail than the ATX bikes, the line-up begins with the Talon 27.5 4 with Shimano Altus and Acera gears, Tektro hydraulic disc brakes and a Suntour XCT 100mm suspension fork. The top-spec model — the Talon 27.5 0 — features Shimano Deore and XT Shadow gears, Shimano hydraulic brakes and a Fox Float EVO CTD 100mm fork. With five bikes in the range, there’s a Talon 27.5 for almost everyone.

Taking all the great qualities of the Talon 27.5 range but rolling on smooth and stable 29in wheels, the Talon 29er line-up features two bikes. The Talon 29er 2 comes built with Shimano Acera, Alivio and Deaore components, Tektro hydraulic disc brakes and a Suntor XCM 100mm fork; while the Talon 29er 1 enjoys a mix of Shimano Deore, SLX and XT Shadow gearing, Shimano hydraulic brakes and a RockShox Recon Silver 100mm suspension fork.

XTC Advanced 27.5 £1,595-£2,895

Created for cross-country mountain competitors, the XTC Advanced range is based on a lightweight carbon-fibre frame featuring Giant’s MegaDrive down tube and PowerCore bottom bracket to really help promote speed and control, not to mention extra design refinements such as an integrated seat clamp and internal cable routing. The three-bike line-up starts with the XTC Advanced 27.5 3 with Shimano Deore and SLX gears, Shimano hydraulic brakes and a RockShox Recon Gold 100mm suspension fork. Meanwhile, the top-spec model — the XTC Advanced 27.5 1 — is kitted with a full Shimano XT groupset, including XT hydraulic discs, and a Fox Float Factory CTD 100mm suspension fork.

The XTC Advanced 29er 2 is built with Shimano Deore and SLX gears, Shimano hydraulic disc brakes and a RockShox Recon Gold 29er-specific 100mm suspension fork; and the range topping XTC 29er 1 comes with Shimano SLX and XT parts, including SLX hydraulic discs, and a Fox Evolution CTD 100mm suspension fork.
