Book of Condolence

Sign our book of condolence for Tom and Ben

TomTom Rodgers and Ben Ineson, both rising stars of the UK Downhill Race Scene, tragically lost their lives in a car crash on 14th January 2009.

BenThis book of condolence enables you to pass on messages of respect to their families and friends.

The messages will be eventually printed off and handed to Ben and Tom's parents so they will have a lasting collection of all the moving tributes that are being made to their sons.

I can't believe it was all a year ago, Ben's cheeky smile and Tom casually stood with his pants around his ankles in a room full of people are two images that are etched into my memory forever. Thanks for that one Tom. Everyone still misses you both so much and always will. X

Well Benji, a year's gone by. So much has happened, but then you know that. I text your mum yesterday morning telling her something a good friend told me the other day: no matter how misty, murky, cloudy or rainy it may be here, the sun is always shining above the clouds. But then you know that anyway.

I was in a 'Challenging Behaviour' Lecture at uni at between 1 and 3 yesterday which I think seemed quite apt considering the trouble we used to get into! I had a kid in my last placement class that looked and behaved just like a little you, and his name was Ben!

I think about you everyday Boyo and try keep in touch with the Ineys - my thoughts are with you all (and with Tom's family).

Oh I got a new motorbike too - a baby blade - I promise I'll try harder not to leave you at Cadwell next time :) I got a new chain too due to your escape antics!

Well time to sign off once and for all. I hope you're both still doing your thing - I won't say Rest In Peace because you couldn't sit still if you tried!

Love you lots, miss you

Well Benji, just been for a walk with your Aunty Fiona up to the church, to where the daffodils start to come up around about now along the stone wall. I cleared two little spots for you in the snow (with my bare hands!!) and on the second as I did so a daff peeped through, so we layed a little bit of you to rest. there at half past one.

And that same memory was the one on my mind as we walked back - you know the one.

Lots of love Benji

Well Ben, I really can't believe that it is now a year since Emms called me in the middle of the night in Kazakhstan with the horrible news of your death. Neither can I believe that you are not with us any more - but gone to a better place and giving somebody else absolute hell!

We stopped off at Casterton on the way home from the Lakes and had dinner with your Mum, Dad and the rest of the tribe - we had a great time and raised a glass to you. We also made plans to see your Mum and Dad sometime in the summer and perhaps have some time away with them in Scotland. Something for me to look forward to.

I was not fortunate enough to know Tom, but feel sure that the two of you will be there keeping everybody around you entertained.

Come and visit us whenever you feel like it; Fiona and the Girls will know that you're there!

Go do it Guys!

I have only just found out about the accident and wanted to say how sorry I am. I used to live in Saltaire right near All terrain and would often go in. Tom would always be around to chat and have a laugh with, he was a really funny guy. You could tell how much he enjoyed his life, he was so positive. He was also really helpful, one time he rushed through an order on some forks on his own racing account so I could get them in time for a riding holiday. Your time was too short by far but you lived it to the full!!

I was only small when i last saw Ben..... but i can still remember that smile of his!! Him and my sister (vanessa) used to play tricks on me..... because i was the smallest and easy to pick on.... but Ben always checked i was okay and not upset afterwards.... Vanessa just laughed at me x
I Did not know Tom, but I know that he too left a footprint in everyones lives, and will be greatly missed.
I wrote some lyrics for the lads, and have nearly finished composing the music to it....
Riding the Stars:

A life of adventure,
'till the very end.
An unexpected happening...
hidden behind a bend.

But you kept that smile,
that now travels through the sky,
with you close behind it...
simply riding the stars.

You always loved a risk,
on those steep and curvy bends,
with a gate way to heaven...
this journey never ends!

you left us with a moral,
full of deeper meaning.
Never leave it on a quarrel,
But a smile that is beaming.

So keep riding all those stars.
And do what you do best...
You're looking down upon us saying 'Party all the rest!!'

I have so many memories growing up with the Inesons - Ben christened me 'Benessa' when he couldn't say my name, a nickname which has stuck to this day. Although I didn't see as much of Ben as I would have loved to in the last few years, I know that he was a top lad and know that he will be having as much fun shredding up there! The 2 minute's noise was amazing, and worth the burn on my hand from a leaky air-gun - a very fitting and touching tribute.

Although I never personally knew Tom, if Ben was anything to go by then he would have been another fun loving adrenaline junkie, never missing an opportunity!

Ben
I read the following words at your funeral and was thinking of this all day on Saturday.

Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there - I do not sleep
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the softly falling snow,
I am the gentle rains that fall,
I am the fields of ripening grain,
I am in the morning hush,
I am in the graceful rush
of beautiful birds in circling flight,
I am the starshine of the night,
I am in the flowers that bloom,
I am in the quiet room,
I am in each lovely thing,

Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I did not die.

They both helped me to get into mountain biking, they were both big inspirations to everybody iv ridden with as they would always try anything. I knew that i would never be able to reach the level of biking which they did starting at such a late age but they were a true inspiration and there love for the sport showed how they had not got as far as they did for the fame but for there love of the sport and thanks to them i can say that i love the sport and it is a great way of remembering them.

I didn't know Tom but if he was a mate of Ben's then he must have been a great lad and all the comments on this Condolence Book are testimony to that.

This is a story about Ben when he was a very small boy which I've never forgotten! I was working in the Skipton outdoor shop when Sally came in to buy a gift for Mick, with Ben in a buggy. She said they'd just been into Rackhams (posh shop?!) and a little old lady had bent over the buggy and said "What a dear little boy!" Ben looked up at her and said very clearly... "Bastard!" What a boy! Bet he got that language from his dad! When the family moved to live in Malham for a while I saw a lot of them as I worked in the National Park Centre - Sally and Mick are the most loving and hospttable folk in the world and Joe, Hannah, Matt and Ben were always good for a laugh and great company. As an outdoor pursuits teacher, climber and caver for many years I know all about the desire for the adrenalin rush and how ironic it is that these two wonderful lads should die in a car crash. Only a couple of weeks before this unbelievable tragedy Sally was telling me all about Ben's great biking successes. To read about the death of Ben and Tom in the paper was a huge shock and still is. To both families I send my heart-felt condolences - to Sally, Mick, Joe, Hannah and Matt - thinking of you so much and sending my love. Keep on biking boys - there's so much love coming your way from all these friends who have left you messages!

Tom's character was best summed up for me when we were racing at a Maxxis cup in Andorra in 2007, he did really well and when he went up onto the podium i cheered & clapped him, but when i went up he just kept on cheering/clapping for ages and ages and ages after everyone else had stopped even when the spanish and French crowd looked at him strangely he just carried on and on, it was very very funny & just like the sort of thing i remember him for. Happy memories. RIP friend.

Ben was a great young man. What a sense of humour, you saw that twinkle in his eye and knew something was afoot. First met Ben when he was starting biking. We went to stay for the weekend he was either: cleaning the bike, improving the bike, fixing the bike, reading mags about the bike, watching bikes on Sky or complaining he would rather be biking than sailing.
Sally, Mick and his brothers and sister, we are thinking of you.
Ben you are as
'Free as the wind now.'

Got to know Tom through my visits to All Terrain and frequently bumped into him on the train.

One of the soundest and most pleasant of lads of his age, and someone who really added something special to humanity.

My sincere condolences to his family. Losing Tom is a huge loss for you, but I hope you can take a little comfort from the fact that you helped to nurture such a fine person who touched the lives of so many in such a positive way.

I only met Ben once but even then ,both he and Tom were getting kitted up for a bike ride over the hills near Langcliffe, it would be accurate to say that they LIVED, BREATHED AND ATE mountain biking whether they were competing or not. Will always remember Tom as a cheeky red -haired 'chappie' riding round and round the village green along with the other kids in langcliffe, my son Dan included. A lasting memory for all those that were living there at the time!!!!! Two more lives cut Tragically short!! We were passing through the 3 peaks area in August 2007 looking for a campsite as a base for a days road cycling and were very pleased to be directed to the Ineson's place at Northcote Farm. We enjoyed meeting Sally Ineson and talking to her about her son's downhill exploits. We were also very thankful when Sally later posted home to us the headtorch we discovered we had lost in their back field. We didn't meet Ben (he was away MTBing I think) but when I saw the news it didn't take me long to realise this was the same family. We are very grateful to Sally Ineson for the hospitality she showed us and so sorry for her loss. We also send our best wishes to the Rodgers family.

Tom gave my son Andrew, the chance to ride in the All Terrain Team. He was always there to give advice, help with bike problems and certainly some mickey taking, which he was particularly good at. Andrew enjoyed the 'wild' week-end at Tom's house, even if he can't remember it. Ben was usually seen around the team and also made himself available for track advice or whatever he could help with. Andrew looked up to both Tom and Ben with great admiration and thoroughly enjoyed the banter around the team.

The world of Mountain Biking is indeed suffering a huge loss at the passing of two exceptional young men. I will always be grateful for the brief time that I knew them both and feel privileged to have been able to call them friends. They lived life as it should be lived and extracted the maximum enjoyment in every opportunity presented to them both. Each time I think of them both a huge smile comes to me, and that it how I will always remember them.

To Mick & Sally my heartfelt thoughts are with you and your family also to Mr & Mrs Rodgers, Ben and all your family, I hope you can draw some comfort in knowing just how highly thought of both Tom and Ben were in the Mountain Biking Family. They will truly never be forgotten.

I knew Ben and Tom from having met them over the last couple of years or so attending the SDA races which they were great supporters of. They were always a pleasure to have around and as has been said elsewhere always the life and soul of any banter on the go. They both had great potential and sadly we can only guess at how far either of them will have gone. They were an inspiration for sure to some of the younger riders who looked up to them as future stars in the sport. They will be remembered for a long time to come by many people both in the sport and outwith. Good luck boys wherever you are riding now.

I'll say what I've said on various other websites.
It's so ironic that people that live 'extreme' lives die, in such a non related way. Colin Mcrae, Jason McRoy, then you two, all in something completely non-related to the dangerous lives you lived. both of you were a credit to the sport and had massive futures, but were both cut tragically short.
Wherever you are boys, rip it up, and build some sick trails for when we join you. You'll be sorely missed by everyone in the sport.
