Originally conceived for use on Alaskan snow, the key to a ‘fatbike’ is its large volume/ low pressure tyre combo (generally 3.8”+) which provides enough floatation and traction to pedal over soft, unstable and otherwise un-passable terrain. Aka, perfect for exploring the path less travelled!
Not tied-down to specific single-season use, and much, much more than a just ‘snow bike’, the trail-orientated geometry and fat tyres lend themselves well to year-round use, excelling equally as well in typical UK riding conditions like mud, bog, wet roots and loose rock as with the white stuff.
Roll over (and up) just about anything, find grip and traction in places where previously you’d find none, feel the natural ‘cush’ and obscene amounts of deflection smooth out the trail ahead (try 6-12psi for starters), load it up and head out for an adventure where no other bike dare tread. About as much fun as you can have on a two wheels without an engine!
AKA ‘Thor’s Hammer’ and pronounced ‘Myol-n(ee)r‘. Our new double-butted, cold-drawn, seamless, Taiwanese chromoly tubeset also goes by the aliases of 4130, Cr-Mo and Chromo. It’s a like-for-like replacement for other, identical branded chromoly tubing and ultimately means a saving can be passed onto you via either a healthy price drop or a little more room for up-speccing without sacrificing performance.
With an unconventional 20° backsweep, our new Alt bars might (ok, do) look a little weird and take a few rides to get used to but once you do you’ll appreciate the better handling and supreme comfort, especially over long distances they offer by allowing the wrists and shoulders to be positioned at a more neutral/natural angle (put your arms in front of you and notice the position to which the wrists naturally fall). With enough forward wiggle to not need any stem compensation and a trail-friendly 720mm width or trim-able if you so wish.
New TRP Spyke mechanical disc brakes (think mtb version of their Spyre) replace last years’ Shimano hydraulics for easier middle-of-nowhere serviceability and repairs. Same dual-piston action as the Spyre (no static slave piston = better pad/rotor clearance, no rubbing and easier setup) and combo'd with Jagwire KEB-SL compressionless cable outer for optimum performance.
The new, lower geared 30T RaceFace Ride XC chainset replaces last years’ 32T version for a better Fatbike-friendly spread of gears (paired to wide-range 11-36T cassette).
