An escape route via the road-less-travelled or the near-perfect commuter with disc brakes and full length mudguard capabilities?
The CdA blurs the line between the more traditional CX features and a modern Sportive/endurance road geometry – a bonefide modern day Frankenbike with long, stable wheelbase, generous clearances and BB drop, large volume tyres, and an accessible, relaxed geometry.
Wide range, off-road ready gearing, thanks to the inclusion of a new low-profile Acera mtb rear derailleur, paves the way for the wider range 11-34T cassette out back and results in a wall-climbing low gear of 1:1. Combined with the cavernous tyre clearances (up to 40c), it helps to ensure that you’re only ever a simple tyre swap away from knobbly tyred off-road action.
At the heart of the CdA lies our brand new hybrid double-butted alloy tubeset – a clever mix of two differing grade alloys to help give us high levels of stiffness in certain areas and compliance/flex in others. The higher density 6066 downtube and chainstays provides the basis for a stiff and efficient pedaling platform, whilst the 6061 toptube, seat tube and seatstays help give and added element of compliance and comfort, acting as a nice buffer between rider and road.
Generous clearances and eyelets for full-length mudguards and a rear rack mean the CdA morphs quickly and effortlessly into an all-weather load carrier.
TRP Spyre-C mechanical disc brakes utilize and clever and unique dual-piston action meaning we forgo the usual static slave pad/piston usually found with other mechanical disc brake. Improved pad/rotor clearance and therefore no rubbing and infinitely easier setup and less continual tweaking are the upshots. We've also combined them with Jagwire KEB-SL compressionless outer for optimum performance. The devil's in the detail!
Road and mountain components togther, working in perfect harmony? What sort of black magic is this?! Luckily for us SRAM 10sp road and mountain use the same cable pull ratios allowing us to do some 'experimental' speccing. Wide range 1x10 gearing (42T x 11-36T) mixes Sram Apex road r/h shifter with X7 Type2 clutch rear derailleur gives a low gear of 31.9GI and a high of 104.3GI (with managable average of jumps of 14.1%). Less is definitely more!
