The Tour de Fer 10 represents our vision of affordable escapism; a bike designed for the sole purpose of carrying rider and luggage long distances efficiently and in comfort, without leaving a sizable dent in your pocket.
We put it together as affordably as possible without cutting corners that would’ve been detrimental to the ride or long-term ownership. This meant choosing rugged, reliable kit that will last the high mileage for which we intend the bike to be used.
Most of what makes it so good for touring is also 100% applicable to commuting. Everyday practicalities like large volume, puncture resistant Schwalbe Marathon tyres, tough 36H wheelset, powerful, controlled disc brakes, Tubus Cargo rear rack and custom length, extra-long Chromoplastic mudguards combined with a more upright, flatbar-optimised riding position giving more control and better vision, mean the Tour de Fer 10 is just as suited as a daily commuter as it is a cross-continent tourer.
AKA ‘Thor’s Hammer’ and pronounced ‘Myol-n(ee)r‘ (rolls off the tongue, eh?). Our double-butted, cold-drawn, seamless, Taiwanese chromoly tubeset also goes by the aliases of 4130, Cr-Mo and Chromo. It’s a like-for-like replacement for other, identical branded chromoly tubing and ultimately means a saving can be passed onto you via either a healthy price drop or a little more room for up-speccing elsewhere without sacrificing performance.
The mtb-derived Shimano Acera 9sp gearing not only gives us the super low range needed for ascending fully loaded it’s also tough as ol’ boots, can handle the high-torque loads fully loaded riding brings and is readily repairable with spares worldwide. The supplied 44/32/22T chainset and 11-32T cassette return a low gear of 108.7GI alongside a high gear of 18.7GI to ensure you’ll be neither spinning-out on the flats, nor resorting to walking on the climbs, regardless of the load or ascent.
The original, a stable in the Tubus range since it was introduced back in 1988 (and for good reason!) and the absolute standard by which all other luggage racks are measured. Renowned durability for even the longest of tours (CrMo construction and powder-coated finish), light (533g) yet with serious carry capacity (Max 40Kg) and all backed up by Tubus’ famous 30yr warranty.
The eagle-eyed amongst you will have noticed that the of the x3 supplied cages, x1 looks unlike the others. That’ll be the Free Parable Design Monkii Cage. A ‘cargo’ cage as opposed to a ‘bottle’ cage, it attaches via x2 plastic cleats to your normal frame bottle bosses, provides a secure fit whilst utilising an inherently easy-on/easy-off design and allows you to carry just about anything (1.5kg limit) that’ll fit in its’ highly adjustable cradle (1.5L PET bottle, Bivi Bag, flask, sleeping mat, dry bag, bottle of wine, etc).
